Double decker

Lucie tells me she wishes

she could ride in a double decker bus

We are driving a familiar route

from home to spring break camp

not a double decker in sight

My daughter is dreaming

past sight

I want to tell her I've been

on a double decker bus

just last fall

after 34 years of wishing

It was nothing special

I skid the brakes of my tongue

I don't tell her

I want to affirm her instead

but too much time has passed and

I say nothing

Ten minutes later we pull into

the parking lot of normal cars

and SUVs

She tells me to look at the roof

"The snow looks like little sleds"

34 years and I have not seen this before

I could see this better from the second story
